Dan Levin was born in Russia before the Revolution. He is a poet, novelist, biographer (Stormy Petrel: The Life and Works of Maxim Gorky, 1985) and translator of Russian poets. His memoir From the Battlefield (1996), covers his experiences as a journalist in the Pacific theatre during World War II and its personal aftermath. He has most recently published a book of poems about his years in Brooklyn, Take B Train (2011). He died in 2015 at the age of 100.
